One area which has received little or no attention is in the backend portion of the
lane. Many centers have been tilting their pindecks form back to front and reducing
the depth of their flat gutters to the minimum tolerance. If the USBC would restrict
the pindeck tilt level and increase the minimum depth of the gutters, this would
drastically reduce the scoring without hurting the ability of bowlers to hit the
pocket. In order to score, bowlers would have to learn more about pocket entry
angle to achieve strikes. To be fair to proprietors, USBC should give centers a one
-year grace period to make these changes.
“The one ball you know you’r going to use every week is your spare ball.” From
there, you only need a reasonable arsenal a ball for heavy oil and a ball for
medium oil. The patterns aren’t usually extremely dry. You’ll want something
with a dull surface dependingp on your rev rate, and something with a smooth
surface. From there the rules apply as any pattern go as far right as you can
to find a place where the ball consistenely hooks to the pocket.
The first thing is make sure you have a ball that’s strong enough to stop skidding
in the mid-lane (30 to 40 feet) and get into its hook phase. The big difference
between Sport Bowling and typical house lane conditions is that , form left to right
there isn’t an overly obvious free hook zone. There’s a much smaller mistake area.
It’s up to the bowler to create the mid-lane hook rather than having the lane do
the work for you.
