This sport is one in which a player brings a plastic ball that is rolled down an alley to 9 pins. The “ball” is smaller and lighter than US bowling, the ball may have two or no finger holes. The lanes are shorter than US bowling. The 9 pins (cones) are placed in a diamond shape on the alley. In most lanes systems the pins have a rope on top, to pick up the pins and replace then back in to the diamond shape for the next roll. In Germany there are four kinds of lanes systems. The game is played in 120 throws of 4 lanes. On each lane 30 throws. On one lane there are 15 throws on all 9 pins (full) and 15 throws so on till no pins are left (cleaning).
In duckpin bowling. The balls used in duckpin bowling are significantly smaller than those used in ten pin bowling and weigh two to four pounds. Bowlers repeatedly throw or roll the ball down a lane in an attempt to knock the bowling pins over. The pins, like the balls, are smaller than their ten-pin equivalents, and it is therefore more difficult to knock them all down with a single throw. The pins are arranged in a triangular fashion identical to that used in ten-pin bowling. The game is played in bowling centers which have several lanes, allowing multiple groups of bowlers to play simultaneously. The lanes are long rectangular wooden surfaces bounded on either side by gutters. Bowlers release the ball from behind the foul line, which corresponds to a small edge of the rectangle, in an attempt to hit the pins which are positioned on the far end of the lane. Duckpin bowling is popular along the eastern coast, from Virginia to New England. The game is also played in Canada (primarily Quebec), the Philippines, and Argentina.
Five-pin bowling is a bowling variant which is only played in Canada, where many bowling alleys offer it, either alone or in combination with ten pin bowling. It was devised around 1909 in Toronto, Ontario, in response to customers who complained that the ten-pin game was too strenuous. There were five tenpins cut down to about 75% of their size, and used hand-sized hard rubber balls, thus inventing the original version of five-pin bowling.
