IN THE WORLD OF TENPINS, THE UNITED STATES LONG has been recognized as the
leader in the sport. But in today’s bowling world, that recognition would no longer
seem to reside in its old stomping grounds. THE U.S. seems to have lost its firm grip
on the sport, relinquishing its once strong grasp in favor of getting a more firm
handle on the recreational aspect of the game. As a result, the international con-
tingent now seems to be taking more of a leadership position when it comes to
the sport itself, perhaps partly because of the void created by the U.S.’s moving
to a more recreational role, but perhaps also due to a stronger global commitment
to the competitive aspect of bowling.
